Five habits that quietly ruin your car's interior

None of these feel like a big deal in the moment. Give them a year, and your cabin ages a decade. The good news: all five are easy to fix.

Interiors rarely get destroyed in a day. They get worn down by small habits, repeated daily. These are the five we see most often — and what to do instead.

1. Parking nose-out in the sun, every day

UV is brutal on dashboards, steering wheels and seats. If you can't park under cover, a simple windscreen sunshade costs little and saves your dash from cracking and fading.

2. Using household cleaners on leather

All-purpose kitchen sprays strip the protective coating off leather and dry it out, which leads to cracking. Leather wants a dedicated pH-neutral cleaner and a conditioner a few times a year — it's skin, treat it like skin.

3. Letting spills soak into carpets

Coffee, juice, wet shoes, that gym bag — moisture that gets deep into carpet padding doesn't evaporate, it ferments. That's where mystery odours come from. Blot spills immediately and get a proper extraction clean when the carpets have history.

4. Eating in the car (and pretending you don't)

Crumbs work their way into seat rails and vents where no quick vacuum reaches, and they invite friends with legs. If the car doubles as a lunch spot, an interior refresh every few months keeps it civilised.

5. Wiping dust with a dry cloth

Dry-wiping drags fine dust across plastic and piano-black trim, leaving micro-scratches that dull the surface. A barely-damp microfibre cloth lifts dust instead of grinding it in.

Break even two or three of these habits and your interior will age years slower — and when you want a full reset, you know where to find us.
